The world's only country created expressly in the name of Islam, Pakistan was born from the womb of the bloody Partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. It is home to some of South Asia's biggest and oldest cities, and boasts the most powerful military in the Islamic world. But its military's influence cuts domestically, too: The country has never had any prime minister complete an entire five-year term, as they're often unseated by coups.
