The southwest African nation was a British colony, then was ruled by South Africa until it gained independence in 1990. Today, it is a middle-income nation and among Africa's most stable, and depends on mining and tourism as economic drivers. Namibia is also home to the world's largest population of cheetahs, the fastest animals on earth.
