One of the fastest-growing economies in Europe, the Czech Republic has the highest per capita income of the former Soviet bloc nations. The country's ornate castles and medieval town squares are a reminder of its long history, but it also has among the world's highest internet speeds and is the sixth-largest exporter of cars. It's the land of some of the 20th century's greatest writers, such as Franz Kafka and Milan Kundera, and scientists, including Gregor Mendel, the founder of modern genetics.
