Anthony Hamilton lives and breathes football, but the rash of player drug suspensions has him puzzled.

Anthony Hamilton is an OZY essayist. This is part of an ongoing OZY video series of conversations in his Mountain View, California, barbershop.

Tom Brady may have salvaged his 2015 NFL season by avoiding a four-game suspension, but a whole team’s worth of NFL players won’t be so lucky. In large part thanks to violations of the NFL’s substance abuse policy, 34 players or more will miss at least one game this regular season. Most of them face many thousands of dollars in fines.

While this rogue roster may be slightly smaller than 2014’s suspended tally (39 players), the situation saddens OZY’s resident football fanatic, Anthony Hamilton. He worries there’s something rotten inside the game — and in this latest edition of our barbershop series, Hamilton asks his guests how athletes near the pinnacle of success can risk so much by smoking it all away.
