OZY's American Identity Poll: Full Results

Why you should care

Because you can see the results for yourself.

On the occasion of the United States’ 242nd birthday, we here at OZY decided to ask the country what it means to be American. With our partners at online polling company SurveyMonkey, we delved into the nature of patriotism, how Americans define themselves, whether they take pride in their country and what the world thinks of Americans. When people were asked to define the U.S. in one word, their most popular choice was “divided” — but there’s plenty that unites us in the questions too.

This SurveyMonkey/OZY online poll was conducted May 16–20, 2018, among a total sample of 4,731 adults residing in the U.S., including 942 millennials (18- to 34-year-olds). Respondents for these surveys were selected from the nearly 3 million people who take surveys on the SurveyMonkey platform each day. The modeled error estimate for the full sample is plus or minus 2 percentage points. Data has been weighted for age, race, sex, education and geography using census data to reflect the demographic composition of the United States for ages 18 and over. The full breakdown by demographics such as age and party identification is located here.
